Born in 1985, Gabriel Dia is an author and photographer from Rufisque in Senegal. To escape reprisals for his homosexuality, he arrived in France in 2008, where he still lives and works. An engineer by training, Gabriel developed an artistic language through writing. His first passion which led to his first novel, “La Naissance d’une Vierge” published by Éditions de Montigny in 2013.

Her visual inspirations include the works of photographers such as Dominique Issermann and Peter Lindbergh, to name but a few. But it was the discovery of Sara Moon’s work that inspired him to dedicate himself to the art of photography. In his own words, through this art he “can express many more things at the same time”.

In 2021 he held his first institutional exhibition entitled “SABAR”. A universal work, inspired by his life, which echoes the eternal questions of gender and identity. His Sabar and Burning series can be seen at the Fisheye Gallery in Paris until March 5th 2022.

    Métamorphoses, Gabriel Dia

Evanescent, scarlet, masked, luminescent, exposed, subtracted, divided, naked, variegated, disguised, stunned, traversed, contrasting portraits of my emotional states. Playing with shadows, double exposures, grain, flashes, Gabriel Dia composes a series of metaphorical portraits, in which his silhouette is both spied upon and concealed. From fashion to plastic arts, to more experimental representations, the artist merges genres, driven by a fierce desire to reveal his identity without any restrictions. "I have this feeling that the body is the largest and strongest means of expression. It is the most powerful tool," he says. And from this intimate hand-to-hand combat, where he assumes the roles of adversary and confidant, moments of grace are born. Moments of weightlessness where the human being rises, carried by the tolerance and joy that animate the photographs. "This is the meaning of the title of this series: I am metamorphosing. I become someone else in order to be me," concludes Gabriel Dia.
