Circulation(s) festival, 10 years of discoveries

The Circulation(s) festival celebrates today its 10th edition. Ten years of clearing the young European photography, its emergences, its experimentations, its adventures. An itinerary that we have often accompanied in the pages of our magazine, so close are our sensibilities. Many of the artists we have seen hanging on the walls of the festival and published in the pages of Fisheye. There is no coincidence in this partnership, as evidenced by the portrait we already devoted to its flamboyant founder, Marion Hislen, in September 2015, who returns here in a long interview on this beautiful story. This dossier also gives us the opportunity to unfold a panorama in images of this decade and to collect the words of some of the 500 authors discovered by the team of Fetart, the association behind this event.

    Winter Tales

"Hate is the winter of the heart," wrote Victor Hugo in Les Contemplations. Thus, winter is rarely associated with a positive time. Literature overflows with languid anticipation of spring, the season of renewal, love and life. Winter is associated with death, sadness and cold. Yet, winter is beautiful, intriguing, unexpected, and visually rich. When we looked at this theme, we never imagined we would find such a pictorial excitement with authors who embrace winter with passion to transcribe its mysteries. Like storytellers, they write a new grammar of the image that slips into the recesses of our imagination. We dive into the great white, supernatural and incredibly bewitching, as we abandon ourselves to an illicit substance, with fear in our stomachs but our hearts exalted. More than a semantic, this file is a feeling, a conviction, a grimoire which conceals magic formulas that only the letting go and the acceptance of the reverie will allow to decipher.

Ecology, authors at the bedside of a drifting world

Photographers are obliged to go into the field to make their images. Always in the front row, they know the world better than we do. This is probably the reason why many of them became aware - long before ecology became a "trend" - of the environmental problems that threaten our planet. This is probably also the reason why they have become involved in the issue of water, climate change, the destruction of biodiversity, pollution problems, the disappearance of forests, consumerist and energy-guzzling aberrations... They have become alert launchers through images that challenge us by their beauty, their horror or their disturbing strangeness. Without harboring many illusions about the ability of photos to change the world, they continue, they insist, they strive to invent new forms of images that surprise us and make us think.

    Fashion, the new era

For more than a century, glossy printed photographs have not only chronicled fashion trends, they have also reflected the cultural shifts that are taking place in society. Eulogizing clothing to arouse desire and encourage purchase, the history of fashion photography is marked by a number of revolutions triggered by photographers, art directors or magazines. So many seismographs recording the tremors of each decade. Simple niche market at its origin, this photography became a determining actor of the mass consumption culture. The arrival of digital technology, with its accessible tools and its expanded modes of distribution, has given rise to new practices for a whole generation of authors. The latter, freer and more uninhibited than their elders, give free rein to their questioning of gender, identity and their personal universes that they express far from the agreed rules of the celebration of clothing. This singularity and this freedom of tone make the interest of these authors who redraw the contours of fashion photography today.

The taste of authors: 10 photographers favorites

For six years now, the Fisheye teams have been defending an authors' policy - a notion inherited from the 7th art that critics and directors of the New Wave claimed loud and clear. Photographers are also authors, and we would like to pay tribute to them once again in an exceptional 60-page dossier that gives pride of place to the image. The ten artists we publish here have, for the most part, already found their place in our magazine, on our website, or on the walls of our gallery. We continue to follow their work and to support them, because they are the line of force of our activities. These are the women and men who, through their eyes, give us a different view of the world. They are the very material of these pages, and without their creativity and loyalty, we would not be here today.

The women who make the photo

Is there such a thing as a woman's eye? Should quotas be imposed to compensate for the under-exposure of women photographers in cultural events, even though they are in the majority when they leave photo schools. Should we implement positive discrimination? These are the questions that a dozen women involved in the photo industry in France are answering today. They are independent curators, gallery owners, photo editors, managers at the Ministry of Culture... Their points of view allow them to address with finesse subjects that are currently crossing the photography scene, and that will be developed during several round tables at Paris Photo, among others.

    Social photography, activist practices

More than photojournalists who respond to press orders, the actors of social photography make their practice a life choice, which is also a political choice. With new writings to awaken our consciences. A photography of commitment that renews the classic approaches of photoreportage to move the lines. The authors presented in this dossier propose us to look at what we don't see, what we don't want to see, what we can't see anymore.
