An Instagram feature for visually impaired people?

Bizarre or trending subjects? Catch a break with our curiosity of the week. Instagram has launched new features, especially made for visually impaired persons. The first steps towards a more accessible platform.

On November, 28th, Instagram announced that two new features would be added to be application. Especially designed for visually impaired and blind persons, those functions aim at creating a more accessible application. More than 285 million people suffer from visual impairment across the world. Although Instagram’s popularity keeps increasing – the social media has reached 1 billion users in 2018, according to the statistics website statista – the platform now wishes to offer a better experience to a part of the population that has always been overlooked.

Instagram has implemented an automatic descriptive text, which will also be available in audio format. This feature uses a technology similar to facial recognition’s and generates descriptions for each image hosted on the application. A personalised automatic text feature is also available to each user, enabling them to enter a description with the picture they wish to publish. A true progress for the giant Instagram, finally opening up to disabled people.
