At the start of 2018, the Madrid MAPFRE foundation welcomes the biggest Spanish retrospective ever dedicated to Ed Van Der Elksen. The exhibition offers a new vision of the Dutch photographer’s creation, put in parallel with his films and his books. Over several years, Van Der Elksen traveled across the greatest cities of the world, looking for “his people”. His personal and authentic portraits are the witnesses of his exciting life. They compose a sort of second family, made up of persons he met in his path. Dealing with his favourite themes (sex, love, travels, street), the artist shares his reflections and affections, marked by his own distinctive madness. Magic appears by putting together still and animated images. Films take us at the heart of the photographs, with a touching authenticity.
